Social Security Administration Seeks to Do Away with Paper Checks. Find Out All About It and Where You Can Go for Legal Help with Your Social Security Disability Case

ElectronicPay

The Social Security Disability benefits process is full of confusing and difficult things, but for most Social Security Disability recipients, the final step of getting a paper check in hand and cashing it is probably the easiest part. However, this is set to change, and Social Security Disability applicants and recipients need to know about it. Indeed, the Social Security Administration is seeking to do away with paper checks, instead looking to modernize Social Security Disability recipients’ payments, and move them to electronic methods. Here we explain the changes ahead, and where disabled individuals can go for help with their Social Security Disability cases.

Modernizing but Confusing? Learn All About the End of SSD Paper Checks

According to reports on the new changes, the end of paper checks by the Social Security Administration is set for the end of this month, September, 2025. For some, a reported 1% of the total number of Social Security Disability recipients, this will be a big change. However, the Social Security Administration is hopeful that electronic checks will provide some benefits to Social Security Disability recipients. Social Security chief communications officer Nick Perrine said of the changes, “To prevent any disruption in payments, we are reaching out to beneficiaries who currently receive paper checks and encouraging them to switch to electronic payment options before the deadline… Electronic payments offer significant advantages over paper checks, including faster access to funds, increased security, and greater convenience.” The switch from paper checks to electronic payment methods will also upend one part of receiving benefits. The Social Security Administration stated that it will no longer offer temporary check options to recipients when processing initial Social Security Disability claims.

The Cost of Paper Checks and Options for Those That Cannot Receive Electronic Checks

The truth is that paper checks cost the Social Security Administration approximately 50 cents to process, whereas electronic funds transfers of Social Security Disability benefits cost only 15 cents. The Social Security Administration believes that it could “save millions” per year by making the switch. Importantly, however, there may be some exceptions in some cases. A spokesperson from the Social Security Administration noted that, “Where a beneficiary has no other means to receive payment, we will continue to issue paper checks.”
