Social Security Administration Announces Addition of 13 New Conditions to Compassionate Allowances List

This week, on Monday, the Social Security Administration (that is, the federal agency that handles and oversees Social Security Disability benefits for disabled and retired Americans) made a major announcement that may impact numerous Americans throughout the country. That announcement was that the SSA has now added 13 new conditions to its Compassionate Allowances List. The addition of the 13 new conditions may open up pathways for disabled Americans to move through the complex Social Security Disability benefits applications process, and enable severely disabled Americans to get Social Security Disability benefits more quickly. But what are these 13 new conditions that have been added to the Compassionate Allowances List? And where can disabled Americans go for legal help getting Social Security Disability benefits due to them? We answer those questions here.
The Social Security Administration’s Compassionate Allowances List
To get started, what exactly is the Social Security Administration’s Compassionate Allowances List? As the Social Security Administration explains, “Compassionate Allowances are a way to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that, by definition, meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits. These conditions primarily include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children. The CAL initiative helps us reduce waiting time to reach a disability determination for individuals with the most serious disabilities.” The SSA goes on to add, “Compassionate Allowances program identifies claims where the applicant’s disease or condition clearly meets Social Security’s statutory standard for disability. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, the agency can easily identify potential Compassionate Allowances to quickly make decisions.”

The SSA notes that “with the inclusion of these conditions, the [Compassionate Allowances List] now includes 300 conditions total.” SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said of the additions, “We are constantly looking for ways to improve our disability programs and serve the public more effectively…By adding these 13 conditions to the Compassionate Allowances list, we are helping more people with devastating diagnoses to quickly receive the support they need. This is part of our broader commitment to making the disability determination process as responsive and compassionate as possible.”
