Social Security Disability Updates: The Scoop About the Year 2034 and Your Social Security Disability Benefits

There is no question that since the inauguration of a new president and a new administration earlier this year, there have been a lot of questions about the stability and soundness of the Social Security Disability program that helps millions of disabled and retired Americans financially survive. This week, there is news about the status of the Social Security Disability program, and the news is not all that promising. According to national news reports, and based on a report released last week by Social Security’s trustees, “Social Security will not be able to fully pay monthly benefits to tens of millions of retirees and people with disabilities in 2034 if lawmakers don’t act to address the program’s pending shortfall.” The news is no doubt alarming for millions of Americans that both rely on Social Security Disability benefits, and those who have also paid into the system through their taxes, and may ultimately need them.

The news regarding the combined Social Security trust funds – those funds that help elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and surviving family members – is an update to the previous forecast about the timing of the funds’ potential shortfall, which was expected to be one year later, in 2035. In 2034, if American lawmakers do not act now to address the Social Security program’s shortfall, the program will only be able to cover 81% of benefits, according to the trustee’s report. In addition, “Looking solely at the trust fund that covers retirement and survivor benefits, Social Security will only be able to afford scheduled payments in full until 2033, three fiscal quarters earlier than last year’s projection. At that time, the fund’s reserves will be depleted, and continuing income will cover only 77% of benefits owed.” Of the Trump administration’s commitment to “only not cut Social Security and Medicare as part of his megabill,” Nancy Altman, the president of Social Security Works, said, “Any politician who doesn’t support increasing Social Security’s revenue is, by default, supporting benefit cuts.”
